A weekend away by train: York or Bath

Both have a station a short walk from the middle of town, so you can leave the car at home.

Advance fares usually go on sale about 12 weeks before travel and are cheapest early. A railcard pays for itself quickly if you travel a few times a year.

Pick a place where the station is close to the centre, so you can walk to where you're staying. York's station sits just outside the city walls, and Bath Spa is a few minutes' walk from the Abbey. Check the last train home on Sunday before you book anything else.

Pack light. One bag you can lift into the rack yourself makes the whole trip easier.
